PhD Scholarships on offer in Urban Homelessness and Housing Program
SGSC and Unison Housing, Victoria's largest social housing provider join forces to explore community, public, affordable and transitional housing.
The Union Housing Research LaB (UHRL) is a unique education and research collaboration between RMIT University and Unison Housing, Victoria’s largest social housing provider. The LaB was established in 2017 and is funded for five years to undertake an innovative research program informed by the experiences of service users and providers.
We are seeking highly motivated and qualified applicants for two PhD scholarships to commence in March, 2018.
The scholarships will be for two studies:
1) an ethnographic study of two mixed tenure sites that examines the aspects that contribute to successful (or otherwise) communities;
2) a qualitative study examining the challenges formerly homeless households face settling into social housing and the strategies they use to address them.
Both studies will be attached to the LaB’s flagship longitudinal study of community, public, affordable and transitional housing. This study will track approximately 300-400 new tenancies over a three year period.
The successful candidates will work alongside the Director and Deputy Director of the LaB, as well as the LaB’s Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, and other PhD candidates.
Value and Duration of the PhD Scholarship
The value of the Scholarship increases annually in accordance with indexation. In 2017, the PhD scholarship provides the following:
- A stipend of $30,000 per annum pro rata (full time study) (RMIT Research Scholarship Stipend, RRSS)
- A government-funded Research Training Scheme (RTS) place or equivalent. An RTS place is supported with a HECS exemption for the normal duration of the course. Applicants successful in receiving an RTS place are not required to pay tuition fees for the maximum duration of their candidature.
- The standard duration of a research doctorate scholarship is three years full time. Candidates may apply for an extension of up to six months subject to satisfactory progress and school approval.
